Being Mortal Book Discussion

During this book discussion, I was able to fulfill SCI Learning Objective two, Making Connections. It fulfills this category because I was able to connect and apply what I was learning in Gerontological Nursing, my SCI course at the time. I was able to extend the knowledge gained from this discussion into my practice as a nursing student and will take this knowledge with me as I become a registered nurse.

I really learned my stance on the topic of death and addressed my feelings that accompanied it with this discussion. I see Gawande's point of view with gerontological nursing, especially since I have taken the nursing course. I have also had geriatric clinical experiences that have reinforced the ideas that are woven in this novel that we have an underserved older adult population. I also have seen in clinical, as well as my personal life, that people tend to shy away from death rather than approach it head on as many other cultures do. I learned while reading and discussing this novel that this is something I feel strongly about; I believe that as a country we need to work harder to serve the elderly population because of how much they still have left to contribute to society.
